Sadly, the holiday season has taken away just about any free time I have, so I haven’t been posting as much as I like. I plan on bringing things back to normal as soon as Christmas is over.

I guess it all depends on how often the musicians shower?

About the recording:

Feld is a generative, real-time composition which combines computer-controlled homebrew synthesis hardware with custom software signal processing. New sounds and textures continually emerge from the dense, intricately layered stream.

Feld was conceived of as an open-ended sound experience: these three hour-long recordings are meant to be experienced creatively and interactively by the listener. They can be played simultaneously, reordered, heard in fragments, or in any other combination.

About Greg:

Greg Surges makes electronic music, software, and hardware. His work has been released on the Petcord, Wandering Ear, and Digitalbiotope labels, and his research and music have been presented at the International Computer Music Conference in Belfast, Ireland, NIME 2012, the SPARK Festival in Minneapolis, and the 2010 SEAMUS National Conference. He is currently a PhD student at the University of California, San Diego. Previously, he earned a MM in Music Composition and a BFA in Music Composition and Technology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He currently lives in San Diego, CA with his wife and cat.

Hey man, enjoying reading back through this after finding it when doing some reading around People Who Do Noise. I'm in a Glasgow based collaboration and we get together to make noise once every-so-often, amongst other things. Not all Noise fans are dicks… Some just try to make harmless jokes about computers exploding due to downloading files and fail miserably….

Truth be told, I only know a handful of Merzbows Discography. Which might be lame considering I’ve actually seen him play live. (At this particular show, he had a drummer, some homemade instrument, and then performed live with OXBOW. So thankfully, it wasn’t an hour of him just sitting on his MEAT IS MURDER laptop. Unless he actually plans on putting on a PERFORMANCE, I refuse to see him live.)

As far as you saying it’s a starting point goes, It doesn’t surprise me that Merzbow tends to be the starting point for a lot of people who get into this kind of music. I also don’t really have much room to judge since my first experience with Noise music started in a “RivetHead” message board on Myspace.

If you’re interested, I’d recommend you check out this Wiki page for Noise Music. Whenever I was bored, I would randomly click on a page and see what new group/person I could find.

Off the top of my head:

Government Alpha , Justice Yeldham, Whitehouse, The Haters, Cock ESP, steel hook prostheses.

These are just a few names of people/projects that I got into when I first started getting into experimental music. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
